What's New in FreeBSD 12.0

For those who enjoy the good old UNIX, FreeBSD has just released its version 12.0.

For those who aren't aware yet, FreeBSD is a free operating system of the Unix-like type that derives from Research Unix via the Berkeley Software Distribution. However, for legal reasons FreeBSD cannot use the registered trademark Unix,  which was historically called "BSD Unix" or "Berkeley Unix". It's used on desktops, embedded platforms, and to power modern servers.

FreeBSD 12.0 is available for the architectures i386, amd64, sparc64, powerpcspe, powerpc, aarch64, armv6 and armv7.

Check out the new features in this version:

• Some important updates include OpenSSL, which has been updated to 1.1.1a (Long Term Support), NOT consolidated to version 1.8.1, OpenSSH to version 7.8p1, KDE updated to version 5.12.5.
• NFS server 4.1 now includes support for pNFS server.
• FreeBSD 12.0 enabled the DANE-TA kernel configuration option, VIMAGE by default. The NUMA option was also enabled by default in the GENERIC and MINIMAL kernel configurations.
• Graphics support has been enhanced to meet current generation hardware. The DRM driver for modern graphics chipsets will be removed in FreeBSD 13.
• Some drivers were updated and others were deprecated. For network drivers, ixl (4) was updated to version 1.9.9-k, while ixlv (4) was renamed to iavf (4) (updated to use iflib (9). lmc (4), ixgb (4), nxge (4) and vxge (4) were removed. jedec_ts (4) was removed and replaced by jedec_dimm (4).

Download and install FreeBSD 12.0

The FreeBSD 12.0 installer can be downloaded in different formats. It can be installed from a bootable ISO image, as well as over the network. It's also possible to install from a USB memory card on some architectures.
