Windows 10 Gets Linux Kernel: WSL 2 Explained
Linux
Microsoft has made the test version of this version available to users who are part of the Insider program. It should be available to everyone in the first half of 2020
Microsoft has just released to Insider program users the new Windows 10 update, identified as Preview Build 18917 (20H1). Among the new features is the promised inclusion of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), which promises to improve machine performance. In this version of the system, WSL2 will be present, a version with a new architecture that powers the Windows system. This new edition uses a real Linux kernel and changes the way the open source OS binaries interact with the Microsoft platform and the computer hardware. Even with the new architecture, it will work similarly to what users are accustomed to with WSL 1. According to Microsoft, WSL 2 offers much faster system performance and compatibility with the entire Linux system, which allows running more applications, such as Docker (learn what Docker is and check out the Docker commands here). These changes can benefit many people who use both operating systems on the same machine. Many may consider that these changes are aimed only at developers, who can now design games and applications using a compatibility mode with both systems. But this new version can be good for everyone, as it will be possible to make various Linux files compatible with Windows, without the need to switch systems every time you want to access something specific. To verify the effectiveness of this integration, we must wait for comments from users who have already received it and are testing the update. The first impressions should not take long to appear on the internet, since when there are errors in Microsoft's systems, they are quickly spread across the web.
